With the much-anticipated release of the trailer for Avengers: Endgame, the countdown to the movie’s release in theaters has begun. If you haven’t seen it, click here. After watching the trailer, April can’t come soon enough. Until then, we have a great trailer to watch on loop and pick at every detail.
The End of Avengers As We Know It
To open up the trailer, we begin with Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., embracing his demise drifting through the cosmos. A sad, but a real understanding of the movie. Viewers know that the past 10 years have been building up to this moment, and know that some characters are not going to be making appearances in solo movies again. This speak of the end works with the overall somber tone. There are no action shots, no funny one-liners. There are just depressed heroes who feel like they failed the universe and their friends.
While we do not see any shots of those heroes who turned to dust, we do see a couple of faces we did not see in the Infinity War. We see Paul Rudd‘s Scott Lang, the Ant-Man, makes an appearance at the end, but we knew he had survived in his solo movie Ant-Man and The Wasp. However, one face that we are happy to see survive is Clint Barton, played by Jeremy Renner. This time, though, we don’t see Hawkeye. We get to see the hero Ronin make an appearance. For those not familiar, Ronin is a samurai-themed hero who fights with swords. In the comics, Barton does take up the mantle of Ronin after the events of Civil War, which mirrors the current situation well.
In addition to story details, the trailer also reveals the official title for the movie, Avengers: End Game. With a title like End Game, the story is going to have a sad ending for some characters. While we know some of our heroes will return from the snap, somehow, we don’t know if all of the heroes make it to the end. Much like Infinity Wars, we may be leaving the theater upset that a beloved hero’s story has to come to an end.
Last Words on Avengers: End Game
Overall the trailer does not give away a lot of spoilers. The biggest spoiler was seen at the end with Scott Lang. When we last saw him, he was in the Quantum Realm with his way out snapped out of existence. More information about how studios tend to put spoilers or important scenes in the trailer, click here. The fact that this trailer essentially picks up right after the end of the first movie, and only shows those who survived, is a great example of a great trailer.
While we don’t see a shot of Captain Marvel, we can assume that she makes an appearance based on the post credit scene from Infinity Wars. Of course, we were treated to the trailer for that movie, and you can find a breakdown of that here. Seeing how her story connects to End Game will be something to watch.
With the release of this trailer, we reflect on the 10 years of Marvel movies and stories of our heroes have led to this moment. When the movie premieres there will be bittersweet moments. However, the writers knew this. They communicate it to us through Tony Stark’s intro of the trailer. We have watched these characters grow and would hate to see them go in End Game, but, as Stark put it, “part of the journey is the end.”
