Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is many things, a professional wrestler, college football phenom, and one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors. Young Rock chronicles the childhood of a man who eventually takes over the entertainment industry and becomes a full-fledged pop culture icon.
Now on its sophomore season, Young Rock is definitely worth the watch for fans of “The People’s Champ” and the Hollywood mega movie star, and this is why.
Humble Beginnings
It’s crazy to think that Dwayne Johnson lived a rocky life (no pun intended) as he was growing up. Young Dwayne experienced the highest of highs and the sobering lows early in his life. He experienced the exciting life of being the son of a professional wrestling pioneer Rocky Johnson. Rocky is a trailblazer being one-half of the first-ever African-American WWE Tag Team Champions at the time.
However, Rocky’s time in the limelight wouldn’t last for long, and the whole Johnson/Maivia family had hard times as Dwayne was growing up. When Rocky’s wrestling career was coming to a close, everyone had to pitch in. Move from town to town, and work odd jobs to make ends meet.
However, as we know now, The Rock’s family was not going to be down for long. It’s amazing to see how the tough experiences early in life molded Dwayne Johnson, the lovable personality that we’ve all come to know and adore today.
Wrestling Fan Service
If you’re a fan of professional wrestling, like I am, you will love Young Rock. The sitcom gives us access to the territory days of professional wrestling. A time when everything that involved the industry was blanketed in extreme secrecy; the bad guys truly hated the good guys and vice versa.
The “kayfabe” of things makes all the interactions all the funnier. As you see the “heels” like The Wild Samoans, The Iron Sheik, and Andre The Giant interact with the “babyfaces” like Rocky Johnson, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, and more! If you like “old school rasslin'” and want somewhat of an idea of how it was back then, Young Rock is definitely for you.
The Rock Running for President!
Need I say more? The fictional storyline is the backdrop of the whole series. We see Dwayne Johnson relive his past as he runs for office. With Randall Park, of Fresh Off the Boat and Ant-Man fame, playing a fictional version of himself and being The Rock’s sparring partner. The jokes are masterfully delivered as these two comedians have impeccable chemistry every time they’re on screen.
If you want to live out your wildest dreams and see Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson run for president, then this is the perfect laugh-inducing series for you.
Final Thoughts
Young Rock is a must-watch. The sitcom has a lot to offer to fans of Dwayne Johnson from his wrestling days. As well as to the fans that primarily know him for his work in Hollywood. Not only does it keep the laughs going all night, but it also gives people an insight into what the man had to endure to reach the dizzying heights he has earned today.
