aespa “My World” (LIFE K-Pop Review)

After almost one year since the release of “Girls,” SM Entertainment girl group and 4th generation K-Pop leaders aespa is back with their third EP titled “My World.” It’s been a long time coming for the MYs and this day could not come any sooner. The teasers for this new mini-album have been tremendous, effectively building up the first comeback of aespa for 2023.

My World dropped on May 8th of this year, to the delight of all the fans of the talented quintet. We’ve spent more than enough time listening to the whole album and want to give our insight into some key things, specifically the carrier single “Spicy,” and some “must-listen” B-Sides that deserve your attention.

With all that said, let’s get right into it. Here’s a LIFE K-Pop review of the newest outing from aespa, My World.

Spicy

aespa is on another level, no pun intended, with their latest lead single Spicy. Something that immediately caught our attention is the synth-heavy bassline and relentless beat this song carries. It’s hectic from beginning to end, and we absolutely love it. In our opinion, this is probably one of the most exhilarating songs aespa has ever released, thus far,

It’s electrifying, it’s sassy, and it shows another side of aespa. Despite being much more vibrant compared to their past hits, Spicy is very much in line with the group’s style and showcases how aespa can adapt to any aesthetic or concept they’re given.

On top of that, it would be wrong not to mention how good the barres are in this song, and subjectively, we think it’s probably the best aespa has ever been rap performance-wise. All four showed how multi-faceted they are when it comes to performing, and Spicy is undoubtedly one of those songs that’ll get stuck in your head, regardless if you’re a loyal MY or a casual listener.

B-Sides

We want to show some love to some of the B-Sides that we personally enjoyed. First, is “Salty & Sweet.” This song has been circulating for some time, and we were really excited to hear it. Fortunately, we can say that it more than lives up to the hype. If you enjoyed Spicy, you’ll probably enjoy Salty & Sweet.

Another personal favorite of ours is I’m Unhappy.” When the track audio came out ahead of the release of the EP, we were already in awe of how emotional this song made us feel. Listening to it in its entirety doesn’t necessarily diminish the chills we got from this hauntingly beautiful track.

Hotter than Hell

Suffice it to say, aespa’s My World blew us away. The songs featured many styles from angsty to emotional, which shows the range of the SM Entertainment girl group. aespa is back in a huge way and we implore you to listen to My World if you haven’t already.

What did you think of aespa’s newest album “My World?”
