Despite the absolute dross and terrible X-Factor covers, there have been many classics. Best Christmas Songs: Mariah Carey ‘All I want for Christmas Is You’

You can’t be surprised? We couldn’t do a list of Christmas songs and not include the Mariah Carey classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” The lead single from her Merry Christmas album, released on October 28, 1994, has become a must-listen every Christmas and was memorably included in the film Love Actually.

The Pogues and Kirsty Maccoll: ‘Fairytale of New York’

Kirsty MacColl and The Pogues combined to bring us a breathtaking Irish folk ballad that is undoubtedly a staple of Christmas. Since “Fairytale of New York” was released on 23 November 1987, the festive classic written by Jem Finer and Shane MacGowan has reached the UK Top 20 on 19 occasions since its original release. 

Wizzard: ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’

I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday” was released in December 1973, written and produced by their (Wizzard) frontman Roy Wood. It has been covered many times since by artists including Girls Aloud, Leona Lewis, and Kylie Minogue.

Elton John: ‘Step Into Christmas’

The opening “Welcome to my Christmas song” line – will forever ensure the Elton John festive classic “Step into Christmas” – will always be played. Written by Elton and songwriter Bernie Taupin, this yuletide classic is certified double platinum in the UK and Gold in the United States.

Band Aid: Do They Know It’s Christmas?’

The Ethiopian famine prompted Bob Geldof to assemble a 1984 supergroup to record the charity song “Do They Know It’s Christmas?George Michael, Boy George, Phil Collins, Macca, and Bono were just a few who performed on this single, helping it stay at number one in the UK for five weeks.
