The Nintendo Switch has brought Nintendo back into the limelight. It’s already proving itself with new and exciting games such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Splatoon 2, but I can think of a few older titles that would benefit from the portability.
Ten Games that the Nintendo Switch Needs Ported
10. Worms
Worms is a popular 2D strategy series that initially launched in 1995. You control four different worms, each one placed in a different part of a map. Using various weapons, your goal is to kill the enemy worms whilst keeping yours alive. It’s a simple game that would work exceptionally well on the Switch, and would make great use of the two Joy-Con controllers to let you play with friends.
UPDATE: Worms W.M.D has been confirmed for the Nintendo Switch. The game will support single Joy-Con use to create memorable multiplayer moments just as asked for! The Switch version will also feature brand new content including a space theme, new forts, and customization.
9. Super Smash Bros. For Wii U/3DS
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS were fun Smash games. However, each game had a game mode the other lacked. A Deluxe version of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS (or, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch) could be the definitive Smash 4 experience, complete with Smash Run, Smash Tour, all DLC, and all of the exclusive stages for each version. It’d also be a fun game for casual multiplayer with the Joy-Con controllers, and, provided Nintendo allows you to use the Gamecube Controller adaptor, a more hardcore experience if you’re into esports. Some may rather have a brand new Smash game, but considering the series’ long development cycles, a port would be the most realistic expectation.
8. Sonic Classic Collection
Sonic’s Genesis games have been released several times. The definitive Christian Whitehead versions of these games are only available on iOS and Android, but fans have been asking for ports for years. Not only would a Switch release of these games be perfect for playing on the go, but it would provide the physical controls that the smartphone versions lack. Given that the Whitehead ports of Sonic 1, 2, and CD are used, I’d buy them in a heartbeat. It’s also another set of games that would be excellent for multiplayer on the go, thanks to the Joy-Con controllers. They’d also be a great companion for the new Sonic Mania.
7. Super Mario Maker
Super Mario Maker is a Wii U game that can be played in many ways. Feeling creative? Create your own level! Just want to play some Super Mario Bros.? Hop onto the Course World! Want a real challenge? Try the Expert Mario challenge! There’s something for everyone in Super Mario Maker, and a Deluxe Switch version would only enhance the experience. The ability to download and play levels on the go? Great! Being able to make your levels when you’re out of town? Check! Slopes? Uh… Hopefully? A portable version of the Wii U’s Mario Maker to Switch would really do it justice, unlike the lackluster 3DS version.
6. Sonic Colours
Sonic Colours is my favourite boost-formula Sonic game. It has a great selection of levels, and six beautiful and unique environments to boost through. This game hasn’t seen a release since its initial debut on the Nintendo Wii. A port on the Switch at a resolution of 1080p and a framerate of 60fps would be stunning, as evidenced by the Dolphin Emulator. It also has some multiplayer aspects, making it an even more appealing title for Switch.
5. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
The Switch already has a huge main-series Zelda game in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. However, there are currently no bite-sized top-down Zelda games for the system. Porting A Link Between Worlds to Switch would be a great way to fill this gap. It’s my favourite top-down Zelda, and it’d look great at 1080p.
4. Crazy Taxi
Hey hey hey, come on over and have some fun with Crazy Taxi! Crazy Taxi is a fun arcade game where you work as a taxi driver. It’s more exciting than it sounds. Having this game on the Nintendo Switch would be great, as it’s another game that would be great to just pull out for a quick round when you have free time. The only other time Crazy Taxi has been available on the go with physical controls has been in Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars, released on the PSP in 2007.
3. Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2
In spite of all the criticisms the Adventure series faces, they’re still solid games. Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 have both had HD ports, and I think that they’d be right at home on the Nintendo Switch, making the games playable on the go for the first time. The idea of having a fully-fledged portable Chao Garden is also captivating. Just make sure you make Adventure widescreen this time, SEGA.
2. Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario 3D World is an alternative take on 3D Mario. Unlike the other 3D games such as Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Odyssey, 3D World conforms to the general format of the 2D games. The alternative is another ‘New!’ series game, which I think we’ve all had enough of. The Nintendo Switch is already getting Super Mario Odyssey in October, though, so this may have to wait.
1. Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix
Kingdom Hearts is an amazing series, with games ranging from ‘good’ to ‘stunning’. Unfortunately, Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 is currently only available for the Playstation 4, but it would work so well on the Nintendo Switch. The Kingdom Hearts games we’ve had on handheld systems have been the less enjoyable games in the series, and having a masterpiece such as Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix on the go would blow my mind. If the Switch can’t handle the higher framerate of the PS4 ports, I’d reluctantly settle for 30fps.
