Latest The Walking Dead Spin-Off Takes on Manhattan

Isle of the Dead will feature Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) surviving in a post-apocalyptic Manhattan.

Dan McDermott is responsible for content creation for the AMC Network’s Entertainment Group. Following a press release announcing this fascinating new Walking Dead spin-off, he teased the following:

“This is a very big day for the expanding universe we are building around The Walking Dead.”

Dan added:

“It also lets us explore a corner of this universe located on the island of Manhattan, with an iconic skyline that takes on a very different meaning when viewed through the lens of a zombie apocalypse.”

The thought of seeing established characters from The Walking Dead slaying zombies in Manhattan is a fascinating prospect. The iconic Manhattan skyline is the perfect setting for exploring two characters we all know in even more detail.

Maggie became an integral part of the Walking Dead from the early days on Hershel’s farm, way back in Season 2, with her family – with character development seeing her marriage to Glenn Rhee and right through to the death of her sister, Beth, as well as Glenn‘s own death at the hands of spin-off companion, Negan. Maggie and her young son, Hershel Jr., embarked on a journey of their own following the death of Glenn. After several years away from Hilltop and the remaining survivors, she and Hershel Jr returned only to discover that, much to her disgust, Negan – who brutally killed Glenn with his barbwire-coated baseball bat named after his late wife, Lucille – was living at Hilltop as a seemingly reformed character.

Negan burst onto our screens as the antagonist and leader of The Saviors. He ruled the Saviors as a despotic authoritarian and anyone that crossed their path would be met with unabashed brutality. Most were defeated with a devastating swing of Lucille.

Negan used his authority and vast resources to crush anyone that crossed him. He scared many groups into working for the Saviors in exchange for protection from walkers. Negan wanted nothing more than to control everyone. After being defeated by The Militia, Negan was imprisoned within the protagonist group’s settlement, named Alexandria

Negan later returned to Alexandria as something of a changed man – developing a close friendship with former lead character Rick Grimes’ young daughter, Judith Grimes. During the Whisperer War, Negan memorably killed their leader, Alpha. Negan infiltrated their group and befriended Alpha before brutally killing her. He decided to leave Alexandria convinced Maggie was waiting to exact revenge on him for killing Glenn.

Among many fans of the Walking Dead, opinions of Negan have changed, with many viewing him as something of a lovable anti-hero. The prospect of seeing Maggie and Negan team-up will be a surprising one for many TWD fans. We all saw Negan brutally slay Glenn on the season seven premiere – ensuring the two have not been on the best of terms since.

Those currently watching the 11th season will have seen Maggie and Negan reluctantly team up. Despite the two recently going their separate ways – could this be the run-up to them heading to New York? Executive producer Scott Gimple teased the upcoming six-part first season spin-off will take Maggie and Negan “to their limits with the world – and each other.”

Will Negan and Maggie be working together to survive? Will Maggie be hunting Negan? Whatever narrative Isle of the Dead gives us, we will see Maggie and Negan in post-apocalyptic anarchy filled New York – the prospect of which is enthralling. We are already looking forward to seeing what AMC has in store for this eagerly anticipated spin-off. The release date has been scheduled for sometime in 2023.
